What is Formaldehyde?

Formaldehyde, also known as methylene oxide, methylaldehyde or oxomethane, is a colorless gas that sometimes has a noticeable odor. Although it is technically not a volatile organic compound (VOC), it shares similar traits and presents similar risks. (VOCs are chemicals in the air that present health risks to building occupants).

Formaldehyde may come from a number of sources within the home including, but not limited to:

  • Building materials
  • Fabrics and furniture
  • Certain types of insulation
  • Car exhaust
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Heating and cooking fuel
  • Certain types of paint
  • Cleaning products

What are the Risks of Formaldehyde?

Formaldehyde has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals, and is classified as a probable human carcinogen. Symptoms include nausea, headaches, irritation of the nose, eyes and throat, and fatigue.

Fortunately, these risks can be reduced by identifying a formaldehyde risk and addressing it promptly.
